| LIGHTSWORN CONSTRUCTION AND THEORY: by Jake Mattern, Tampa, FL Lightsworn is probably one of the best themed decks ever created with a ton of support, making it one of the top decks this format. First let’s start with an explanation of the deck: The point of Lightsworn is beating down your opponent with a bunch of strong monsters with good effects, at the cost of milling cards from the top of your deck to graveyard at each of your end phases. However the deck takes advantage of this, it has cards such as Wulf, Lightsworn Beast which if milled, gets instantly special summoned to your side of the field, and it’s a 2100 attacker. The other card that takes advantage of this is Judgment Dragon, which is usually the deck’s win condition. Judgment Dragon requires 4 Lightsworn with different names to be in your graveyard to special summon this card from your hand. It’s a 3000 attacker that at the cost of 1000 life points can destroy every card in play except itself, giving an open field for you to normal summon a monster and attack for what is most likely all the rest of your opponents life points by that time. See a sample decklist to the right. Now most of these cards are standard to helping a Lightsworn deck out, but here are some brief descriptions if you are wondering: Why is that there? The 7 different Lightsworn and Judgment Dragon are the standard best ones to use so I won’t explain that. Solar Recharge is a great spell for Lightsworn that lets you cycle further into your deck while milling cards and Charge of the Light Brigade lets you search out your lv.4 or lower Lightsworn creatures while milling as well. Necro Gardna is a great option and a “3 of” card in this deck. It can be easily milled by one of your cards effects (which is good since its effect is a graveyard effect), and is a great discard option if a discard is needed. While in the graveyard, you can remove it from play to negate an attack. Against decks like Dark Armed Dragon, when they commit their hand into playing 2 Synchros, a monster, and Dark Armed Dragon and then attacking for game, Necro Gardna can save you. Then when it’s your turn, you can play Judgment Dragon and make your big swing for game. This also can prevent a Gladiator Beast deck from swapping out their monster. This card is probably one of the best tech options for the deck. Honest is another great card available for this deck. During the damage step if your light monster is battling another monster, you can discard this card from your hand to gain the attack power of the monster you’re battling until the end of the turn. That means that you automatics win the battle! And since every Lightsworn is a Light type monster, this card is insane in the deck. Some of the only few cards that can stop this effect are Gladiator Beast War Chariot and Divine Wrath. Plaguespreader Zombie is not a required card for the deck, but a great choice of tech. Its just give you more options during your turns and it’s a great card in the graveyard. It is a lv.2 Tuner monster that can special summon itself from the graveyard by placing a card from the hard to the top of your deck. This allows the Lightsworn player to now be able to Synchro out big Synchro creatures with messing with how the deck runs. Not to mention you card place cards that are dead in you hand, like Wulf, Lightsworn Beast, to the top of your deck with its effect, putting Wulf in perfect position to be milled at the end of the turn. Beckoning Light and Monster Reincarnation are great cards that grab back you game winning cards like Judgment Dragon and Honest to your hand if they have been milled into the graveyard, while at the same time putting into your graveyard from your hand effect cards like Plaguespreader Zombie and Necro Gardna. All in all, with how quickly the deck draws/mills itself through, the deck practically plays itself and wins in 2-5 turns on average, thus making it one of the best decks of the current format. - Jake Mattern |
